For a series that was brilliant at using quick-time events (Paragon/Renegade interrupts anyone?) to this, well…. From a game mechanics point of view it robbed my character of control (no powers, a single pistol and woozy walking) all designed, I fear, to force an extended quick-time event. The moment Harbinger’s “beam” hit me, things fell apart. They must’ve known how people felt about it. I feel as if they pulled me along for the ride and sank the boat. I think more than anything I feel played by Bioware. It gave us enough time to get our expectations up really high. I think bringing in a love interest was one of the reasons people got so attached to it. My favorite was the time capsule as well. Liara was my love interest as well and I loved the moments with her. But, somehow, this ending keeps overshadowing all of it. We try to move forward, we try to see the great bits. I think what’s amazing to me is how this sticks with fans, how the hurt and disappointment doesn’t leave us. The vast majority felt aggravated by the lack of any real closure. The players’ reaction to the so called ending was virtually unanimous. All we get in the end is a few minutes stretch of sloppy exposition littered with more plot holes than the Star Wars prequel trilogy. To top it all off, we never really see the aftermath of Shepard’s galaxy-shattering decision nor do we learn the fate of the other characters we’ve come to know and love. The catch is that all three create more problems than they solve. And finally, as a send-off, players are asked to make one last choice one of three possible “solutions” to the series’ conflict. That was certainly not the case in Mass Effect 3.Īny semblance of denouement is instead replaced with a mess of a dialogue that adds a new “twist” to the story arc of Commander Shepard while unraveling the entire mythology in the process. I’m perfectly fine with that! A melancholy outcome is still a fitting end to any story so long as it is well-executed and brings true resolution to the plot.
